Museum of Contemporary Art
Located at 220 E Chicago Avenue, this much visited museum is a must-see for any kind of art lover, and boasts art from 1945 onwards. As many people seem to have problems identifying more modern works, the MCA have cleverly attached piece descriptions to alleviate the issue. One of the museum's specialties is the minimalist, surrealist and book-arts collection. Some of the more popular works on display range from Jenny Holzer's LED Truisms to Joseph Beuy's austere Felt Suit. The permanent collection on display boasts works by Franz Kline, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and Rene Magritte. These fascinating displays are arranged in such a way as to highlight the blurring of the boundaries between painting, photography, sculpture, video and other media. Dance, film and speaking events from an international array of artists are often hosted by the MCA. Wonderful views of the sculpture garden and the lake beyond can be seen from the classy Puck's café. The Museum of Contemporary Art opens from 10am to 8pm on Tuesdays and from 10am to 5pm on Wednesdays to Sundays. Admission is relatively cheap, with special deals for certain groups including students.
